WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) today hosted a Postal Service Day of Action at the U.S. Post Office (USPS) in Leisure World Plaza. Rep. Raskin was joined by Nannette Corley, President of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) Local 3630; Jessie Fitzpatrick, a retired USPS employee who served as a Clerk for 26 years; and Louise Doss-Martin, a Navy veteran who relies on the postal service to deliver medication. You can watch the Facebook livestream of the event here.

Following Rep. Raskin’s event and amid thousands of other USPS Day of Action events around the country, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced that he would pause several “cost-cutting” measures blamed for causing mail delays ahead of the 2020 General Election, including service reductions and the removal of mail-sorting machines and public collection boxes. Halting these measures is a step in the right direction but does nothing to restore the mail-sorting machines and public collection boxes that have already been dismantled or removed in multiple states, many of them battleground areas in the 2020 Election.

“The Post Office is a great American institution whose creation brought our nation together, and continues to do so,” said Rep. Raskin. “There’s been a massive outpouring of public sentiment opposing the Trump Administration’s hostile maneuvers to undermine and dismantle the postal service. While I welcome Postmaster General DeJoy’s announcement, we will accept nothing less than a total reversal of these sabotage measures and a full restoration of the mail-sorting machines and public collection boxes that were recently removed in multiple states. Veterans who rely on medicine by mail, seniors who rely on Social Security checks by mail, and small businesses that rely on postal service to participate in commerce all deserve peace of mind that their lives and livelihoods will not be endangered. I look forward to voting this week on House passage of $25 billion in emergency funding for USPS and I am pressing hard for a private right of action to put strong teeth in the bill to stop further corruption of the postal service. The story of the Post Office is the story of America, and our story will long outlive this Administration.”
