This Week's Local Hero

Celebrating 100 Local Heroes

I began recognizing ‘Local Heroes’ in the early days of COVID-19 to celebrate the efforts of Marylanders helping Marylanders. Throughout the past two years, the series has evolved hero-by-hero to feature a wide range of diverse Eighth District community leaders who strengthen Montgomery, Frederick and Carroll counties in myriad ways.

From 2020 to 2022, I’ve featured Local Heroes of all ages, backgrounds, faiths and more—each one a testament to the generosity of spirit of Maryland’s Eighth District. For example: in Montgomery County, mother-daughter duo Lana Anderson and Roxanne Yamashita fight food insecurity, foster literacy and spread optimism with their nonprofit Small Things Matter. In Frederick County, Heidi Keeney championed the countywide COVID-19 vaccination program to help turn the tide of the pandemic. In Carroll County, Carolyn Babylon of Carroll County Food Sunday nourishes her community with local groceries and produce.

The past few years have presented hardships and challenges unprecedented in our lifetimes. But throughout the multiple crises of our day, I’ve found inspiration and motivation in our Local Heroes. These community leaders and activists show us all how to make a difference in the community we love.

Here's to 100 more!
