Mr. Kinnaird has resided in Frederick County since 1960 when he immigrated from Scotland with his parents and younger sister. Mr. Kinnaird was first elected Mayor of Thurmont in 2013 and is now serving his second term.

“Mayor John Kinnaird is an amazingly effective and heroically devoted hands-on small-town Mayor who is available to our shared constituents round-the-clock in Thurmont,” said Congressman Raskin. “He uses up-to-date Facebook posts and old-fashioned word-of-mouth to apprise people of school closings, potholes, community picnics, and whatever is on his mind. An immigrant, a storyteller and an outrageously nice guy, he is an American original who exemplifies why local government works so well in Maryland. I am proud to bring him as my guest to the State of the Union.”

Mayor Kinnaird and his wife, Karen, have four grown children: Christopher, Heather, Erica and Theresa. The Mayor and his wife are proud grandparents to seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In recognition of his exemplary leadership and commitment to the community, Mayor Kinnaird’s awards from various local organizations include: the Community Citizen Award, presented by the Thurmont Grange in recognition of outstanding service to the Thurmont Community; the First Volunteer of the Year Award, presented by the Thurmont Lions Club in recognition of being an active volunteer in the Thurmont Community; and a Thurmont Police Department Appreciation Award in recognition of assistance with the Thurmont Police Station project and contributions to the Thurmont Community.

Mayor Kinnaird’s dedication to the Town of Thurmont extends beyond public office. In appreciation of the town’s history and its residents, the Mayor maintains a public collection of historic Thurmont photographs, which can be viewed here. The Mayor’s photo collection is dedicated to the memory of his late father Robert S. Kinnaird.

Mayor Kinnaird is a Republican. He and Congressman Raskin met in 2016 during the Congressman’s first campaign for the House of Representatives.
