(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) yesterday discussed immigration policy with Montgomery Blair High School students and met with Latino business owners in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District.
As Montgomery Blair High School students kicked-off their “DACA Defense Week,” Raskin joined them to discuss the DACA program and his commitment to passing a bipartisan bill to protect DREAMers from deportation.
Raskin next visited several Latino-owned businesses in his congressional district and presented them each with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition to thank them for their contributions to the community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Maryland is home to 37,319 Hispanic and Latino-owned firms.
Raskin first met with Luis Vasquez, the store manager of La Salvadoreñita Grocery, which has been serving the community for more than 20 years.
He then visited El Sabor Latino Bakery & Catering, where he met with owner Mariza Carballo. The bakery will soon be expanding to serve even more customers.
Raskin’s last meeting was with Yolís Sanchez, the owner of Super Chicken, which has been in business for 17 years.
“This Hispanic Heritage Month, I am proud to honor the history, culture and achievements of our Latino community,” Raskin said.
