WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, Kweisi Mfume, Jamie Raskin, David Trone and Glenn Ivey (all D-Md.) today announced $19,974,160 in Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding for projects at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Martin State Airport, the base of operations for Maryland’s Air National Guard.
The awards were distributed under the FY2024 Airport Terminal Program, authorized through the landmark Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
- $14,574,160, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport: To replace an aging passenger boarding bridge.
- $5,400,000, Martin State Airport: To replace an aging air traffic control tower for increased safety and efficiency.
“Through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Team Maryland is delivering long-needed upgrades and improvements for Maryland’s transportation foundation. We worked to establish the Airport Terminal Program to modernize our airports, which are in critical need of new investments. These projects will improve safety and efficiency and will help ensure our airports deliver a world-class, reliable air travel experience,” said the lawmakers. “Both BWI and Martin State play key roles in our aviation system, and these awards will help them continue to be engines for economic opportunities for our state and the region.”
“Our administration’s efforts to strategically invest in modernizing state assets, including at BWI Thurgood Marshall and Martin State airports, continues to bring federal dollars home,” said Governor Wes Moore. “The funds awarded from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will support critical infrastructure projects at two important airports and strengthen economic development in Maryland.”
“These much-needed federal dollars will enhance safety and modernize customer experience at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport and Martin State Airport,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “The nearly $20 million in federal grants are a critical investment in Maryland’s infrastructure system and will allow the Maryland Aviation Administration to make state-of-the-art upgrades to these facilities.”
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, enacted in 2021, allocated $5 billion over five years to the Airport Terminal Program, which awards grants for airport terminal development projects.
