(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Chair of the House Oversight Committee Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, and Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), Vice Chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, today sent a letter to Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos expressing concern about the Department’s efforts to censor viewpoints that are critical of its work.

The Members wrote:

"We write to express our serious concerns regarding actions you have taken to restrict the free expression of ideas at the Department of Education and in institutions of higher education across the country.”

The Members outlined concerns that the Department blocked access on its internal network to websites of organizations opposed to its policies, threatened public institutions that express opposition to the President and ignored political allies that censor students. Finally, the letter requests documents related to the Department’s efforts to chill the free expression of ideas under the guise of upholding the First Amendment.
