Raskin leads full Maryland Congressional Delegation effort to rename local Post Office after longtime employee Sergeant Edward Lawrence Ramsey

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform voted to advance Representative Jamie Raskin’s (MD-08) bipartisan bill to rename the Olney Post Office after Sergeant Edward “Ed” Lawrence Ramsey, an Army veteran and beloved former employee. Now that the legislation has passed out of Committee, the bill will move to the House floor.

“Ed Ramsey was a true patriot in every way,” said Rep. Raskin. “He dedicated his life to his family, his neighbors, his country and to continuing public service. After serving more than two decades in the U.S. Army, Ed brought his skills and experience back to Montgomery County as a postal clerk where he brought joy and connection to the generations of families he served over his 27-year Postal Service career. We’re forever thankful to Ed for his devotion to Olney and MoCo and that’s why we’re working to honor him with a post office named in his memory.”

Rep. Raskin introduced the legislation on November 25. The bipartisan House bill is cosponsored by Reps. Steny Hoyer, Andy Harris, Kweisi Mfume, Glenn Ivey, Sarah Elfreth, April McClain Delaney and Johnny Olszewski (all MD). U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks (both MD) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

Tragically, Sergeant Ramsey passed away in January 2022 following a medical emergency he experienced while on duty at the Post Office. Should this bill pass into law, the office where Sergeant Ramsey served so admirably would be renamed the “Edward L. Ramsey Olney Post Office Building.”
