Washington, DC – Following the recent deadly terrorist attacks against Israel and after receiving a request sent by Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) yesterday announced that it would extend the federal tax filing and payment extension deadline for Americans affected by the crisis from October 16, 2023 to October 7, 2024. The IRS will automatically identify taxpayers who are eligible for this relief based on residence information on previously filed returns. Other eligible taxpayers can receive this relief by contacting the IRS. Complete details about the extension, including individual taxpayer eligibility, can be found on the IRS website.

“Thanks to this federal tax filing and payment extension, Americans abroad who have been affected by the horrific terrorist attacks in Israel and the ongoing violence can attend first and foremost to their physical safety and security,” said Rep. Raskin. “I’m grateful that the IRS is dedicating its support and resources to addressing the needs of our people. I’m grateful to my constituents in the Eighth District for bringing this important issue to my attention so that we could achieve a speedy resolution in a time of continuing heartbreak and stress.”

At least 27 American citizens have been murdered in the terrorist attacks by Hamas and more remain missing. The State Department has issued a travel advisory recommending Americans reconsider travel to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, and is coordinating with Americans in the region to ensure their safe return to the United States.

Rep. Raskin was previously successful in securing tax filing extensions during the COVID-19 pandemic amidst suspensions of essential tax preparation and support services.
