WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) issued the following statement after the House passed legislation establishing an independent bipartisan 1/6 Commission. The final vote tally was 252 to 175, with 35 Republicans joining all House Democrats in support of the Commission:

“I am delighted that the House has now voted to create an independent bipartisan Commission to examine the events and causes of the violent insurrection against America on January 6. I hope that the Senate will act quickly to approve the legislation. Good for 35 House Republicans for joining all the Democrats in doing the right thing. And we owe Chairman Bennie Thompson and Ranking Member John Katko a debt of gratitude for their bipartisan leadership.”

“I want to salute all the brave Capitol Police officers who defended us on January 6th and thank the ones who penned a powerful anonymous letter about the trauma and anguish they faced while protecting Members of Congress, our staff, our Capitol, and our democracy on January 6th. I hope everyone reads their words and finds opportunities to listen to Capitol officers. It is shameful that some of the Members they protected, including the Minority Leaders, now want to downplay the dangerous violence of that fateful day. Let us show gratitude for the heroic actions of law enforcement on January 6 by finding the truth and making sure this never happens again.”
