WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, Kweisi Mfume, Anthony Brown, Jamie Raskin and David Trone (all D-Md.) today announced more than $32.6 million in federal funding for the Association of Public Health Laboratories, based in Silver Spring, Maryland, to expand domestic and global health research and preparedness efforts.

“Infectious disease outbreaks in one country pose a threat to all countries and our public health laboratories play a vital role in keeping us safe and well-informed. This robust round of federal funding will bolster our public health and technology infrastructure to detect, track and respond to infectious disease threats like COVID-19,” said the lawmakers. “We are committed to securing additional funding to support our medical researchers and global partners so we, as a global community, can fully respond to future public health emergencies.”

The award of $32,574,283 comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a part of a Centers for Disease Control program. The funding will help refine medical surveillance systems, bolster public health emergency management programs, expand testing capabilities, support the public health workforce and boost medical technology infrastructure.
