(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision preventing the Trump Administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census:

“I’m delighted that even Chief Justice Roberts has now acknowledged the truth about the sinister partisan effort by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and the Trump Administration to impose a ‘citizenship question’ on the census. The Court, in a 5-4 decision, found that the Administration could not add this question to the 2020 Census based on its hilariously phony claim that it was only trying to protect voting rights at the request of the Department of Justice. The Court majority--shamefully not joined by Justices Alito, Kavanaugh, Thomas and Gorsuch--upheld lower federal court findings that the voting rights concoction was pure contrivance and pretext, that the Administrative Procedures Act was trampled repeatedly along the way by the government, and that the real purpose for adding the question was hidden from view. Documents have since come out showing that the GOP’s master of gerrymandering had hatched the idea as a way to create a terrible undercount of communities with large numbers of Hispanic and African-Americans and to reduce political representation for Democratic-leaning constituencies while increasing the share of legislative seats going to Republicans. The Administration has stated repeatedly that it must start printing census forms next week, so any hope the Administration harbors of successfully manufacturing a valid reason for this change and barreling it through the administrative process seems close to nil. Yet, right-wing attacks on democracy never sleep, so we must all remain vigilant. Meantime, Secretary Wilbur Ross and Attorney General William Barr should stop obstructing Congress and immediately produce all of the documents subpoenaed by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. The public knows the truth, and you can’t fool all the people all the time.”
