(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Following a Maryland congressional delegation meeting with Maryland Secretary of Transportation Pete K. Rahn, U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, Anthony Brown, Jamie Raskin and David Trone released the following joint statement in response to the news that Maryland officials and CSX have identified additional funding to expand the Howard Street Tunnel:

“We are pleased to hear that the State of Maryland and CSX have found additional funds to proceed with the Howard Street Tunnel Project. Maryland’s federal delegation has been united and steadfast in our support for this project, having impressed upon Secretary Chao its importance since she first took over at the U.S. Department of Transportation. We also met with CSX, urging them to remain committed to getting this done. So we were pleased this summer to secure a $125 million federal investment on top of an initial $91 million investment from CSX. This federal-state-private partnership will not only improve the Tunnel and the Port of Baltimore, allowing double-stack rail, but it will also help create over 7,000 jobs in Maryland.”
