Resources for Affected Federal Workers and Contractors

Federal Guidance

  • Guidance from the Office of Personnel Management can be found here.

  • MyFedBenetfis is offering assistance programs for furloughed federal workers during the shutdown. More here

Local, County, and State Government Assistance

  • The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is offering free rides for all federal employees commuting to and from work on the state's bus, commuter trains, and light-rail lines during the shutdown. You only need to show a federal employee I.D. More here.
     
  • If you are a federal employee or contractor in Maryland and have been furloughed as a result of the federal shutdown, you may file your claim online using the Federal Civilian Employee Application for Benefits or you may file a claim by calling 410-853-1700 or contact an unemployment insurance claim center.
  • The Montgomery County Government's Federal Shutdown Assistance Portal has important information & resources for County residents affected by the shutdown. 

  • The Frederick County Government has Federal Government Shutdown Assistance listed here on their website.

  • The Rockville Financial Assistance Program may be able to assist Rockville residents facing financial crisis.

Carroll County Assistance
  • The Carroll County Board of Commissioners has announced that residents of the County who are financially impacted by the shutdown will be allowed to delay payments on certain bills. Residents must show proof of federal employment in order for the County to develop deferrals and payment plants for water, sewer, real estate, and personal property tax bills.

  • For other types of debt collections, contact the Dept. of the County Attorney at 410-386-2030
Utility Provider Assistance
  • Washington Gas is providing flexible payment arrangements for affected workers. See more here.

  • Pepco offers general assistance programs and guidance here.

  • WSSC has suspended all water service shutoffs during the shutdown, is waiving late fees, and offering customer affordability programs. More here.

Food Assistance in Montgomery County

  • Manna Food Center has waived income requirements for meal assistance. More here.

  • The Religious Coalition operates a network of 9 food banks across Frederick County. More here.

Medical Assistance in/near Frederick County

  • Clarksburg Medical Center is offering assistance to affected workers without a co-pay or co-insurance. More here.  
  • Mission of Mercy offers free health care, dental care, and medication to those in need. More here.

Credit Union Guidance

  • The Navy Federal Credit Union is offering interest-free shutdown loan assistance to Active Duty Coast Guard Servicemembers and other federal government employees.

  • The Congressional Federal Credit Union is offering interest-free Furlough Relief loans for eligible members during the shutdown.

  • The U.S. Employees Credit Union is offering interest-free shutdown loans to eligible members.
