WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Steny Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, Kweisi Mfume, Anthony Brown, Jamie Raskin, and David Trone released the following statement after a virtual meeting held on Monday by the Congressional delegation with U.S. Postal Service (USPS) officials about the major mail delivery problems affecting Maryland communities throughout the state.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) hosted a Telephone Town Hall on the evening of Monday, March 15th to provide an overview of the American Rescue Plan, which was just signed into law by the President last week. More than 4,000 residents in Maryland’s 8th District and beyond joined to learn about key provisions in the Plan to defeat the coronavirus, engineer economic recovery, and deliver urgently needed direct relief to the American people. Following an overview of the Plan, Rep. Raskin took questions from callers, including questions from Montgomery County Councilmember Tom Hucker and Thurmont Mayor John Kinnaird.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) today announced that his office is accepting applications for Community Project Funding, a program for funding what were formerly known as earmarks, in the Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations process, consistent with the House Appropriations Committee’s recent announcement. State and local governments and certain 501(c)3 non-profit organizations may be eligible for this federal funding. Jamie Raskin (MD-08) and Bill Pascrell Jr., Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, led 102 House Members in urging the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the U.S. Treasury Department to extend the April 15, 2021 federal tax filing and payment deadline. The request cones in the wake of recent significant changes to federal tax law included in the American Rescue Plan, which was just signed into law last week.

Backed by Hopkins Research, Legislation would Aim to Reduce Gun Violence by Incentivizing State Gun Licensing Laws
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Jamie Raskin (both D-Md.) reintroduced the Handgun Purchaser Licensing Act, along with Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy and Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (all D-Conn.). The bill creates a federal grant program to incentivize state and local governments to enact laws requiring individuals to obtain a license before purchasing a handgun. According to research conducted by the John Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research in 2015, these laws are statistically proven to reduce firearm homicides and keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. Another 2020 study published in the American Journal of Public Health confirmed that permit-to-purchase laws are effective in reducing gun violence.

Jamie Raskin, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, sent a letter requesting that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) provide a briefing to Congress about the infiltration of law enforcement departments by white supremacists. The FBI repeatedly told the Subcommittee last year that there was no evidence that this was a significant threat.
