WMATA, MTA, and transit systems across the U.S. that serve as regional economic drivers face severe and worsening financial concerns
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen led members of the Maryland delegation, including Senator Ben Cardin and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, Kweisi Mfume, Anthony Brown, Jamie Raskin, and David Trone (all D-Md.) in sending a letter urging congressional leaders to provide critical funding for transit agencies as a part of any upcoming COVID-19 relief proposal. In light of recent news of the dire financial situation WMATA, MTA, and other transit agencies across the country are facing, this crucial funding would help ensure these systems have the resources necessary to limit additional layoffs and service cuts during this challenging time. Public transit systems serve as a key economic driver in our region, are crucial for commuters and front line workers, and employ thousands of Marylanders throughout the region.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jamie Raskin’s (MD-08) bipartisan House Resolution 512, calling for the global repeal of blasphemy, heresy, and apostasy laws, passed the House of Representatives by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 386-3. The Resolution also calls for the immediate release of religious prisoners of conscience worldwide. As more than 80 countries use blasphemy laws to persecute and imprison religious minorities and dissenters, the House asserted the essential importance of freedom of religion and liberty of conscience globally. Donald McEachin (VA-04) today unveiled the Justice Hotline Act of 2020, legislation to create a grant program for the establishment of a national hotline and online resource service to assist victims of law enforcement officer violence and harassment. Co-introduced with Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) and Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Chair of the Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, the Justice Hotline Act of 2020 would establish a 24-hour, confidential, toll-free hotline and online service whereby individuals could connect with service providers, as well as receive important information on available federal, state, and local legal and health resources and how to file a formal complaint.
